Stressed sounds and syllables

Every word of more than one syllable has a syllable that is emphasized more than the others. Accented syllables receive more force and are louder than unaccented ones.

Possible pronunciation problems

You may place de stress on the wrong syllable. For example:

  • DEsert (desierto, in Spanish) becomes DessErt (postre, in Spanish).

You may stress every vowel in a word equally and forget to reduce vowels in unaccented syllables. For example:

  • TomOrrow becomes TOmOrrOw.
